The 3 Symptoms of Mange That Many Ignoreare very important for the treatment ofScabies. In addition, scabies, popularly known asScabiesis a contagious skin disease, which has as its etiological agent a mite of the species Sarcoptes scabiei. THEScabiesor scabies (in Latin: Scabere - "scratching") is a contagious parasitic skin infection that occurs between humans and other animals. It is caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei, which takes refuge under the host's skin, causing intense allergic itching and pimples - like rash. Occasionally small holes can be seen on the skin. Initial infections require between two to six weeks to become symptomatic. Reinfection, however, can become symptomatic within 24 hours.

Symptoms can affect a large part of the body or just certain areas, such as the wrists, the skin between the fingers or at the waist level. Children tend to be more susceptible to head infections. The itching tends to get worse at night. When scratching, the skin can be damaged by exposing it to additional bacterial infections.

Causes of Scabies:Infection by the parasite causingScabieshappens through intimate contact between people or even through clothing.

THEScabiesis caused by a tiny mite, which can only be observed by means of a microscope: the Sarcoptes scabiei. This parasite feeds on keratin, a protein that forms the bed of the skin. After mating, the female lays eggs (six, on average), which hatch two weeks later. From there, the lesions can spread to other parts of the group from the touch - mainly because one of the most common sites for the appearance of lesions is between the fingers. The hands are, in fact, the main means of transport of the parasite. The characteristic itching of theScabiesis a result of an allergic reaction of the body to the presence of mites.

THEScabiescan also affect dogs and cats, but these are usually affected only by specific species of mites. Humans can even contractScabiescaused by mites typical of dogs and cats, but only temporarily, because mites have a preference for a specific type of host. In this way, they do not survive far from the "perfect host".

Scabies Symptoms Many Ignore:The most peculiar characteristic ofScabiesis an intense itching, which usually worsens at night. Dust mites can often be seen as very thin lines that are up to 1 cm in length and in some cases as a small protuberance at one end. Often, the act of scratching the holes causes a bacterial skin infection (called secondary infection). Sometimes only tiny pustules are seen, many of which become spiked by the itch.

Pustules can appear on any part of the body, including breasts and penises. In adults, the pustules do not appear on the face. The pustules appear first in the spaces between the fingers, wrists, inner elbows, armpits, along the waist line or buttocks. Over time, it may be difficult to see the pits, as they may become occluded due to the inflammation caused by scratching. People who live in hot climates develop small red pustules with few pits.

In black people and others with dark skin, theScabiescan cause solid raised areas. In children the areas that can be affected are the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, and scalp, mainly behind the ears. In the elderly,Scabiescan cause severe itching but very mild symptoms on the skin, making it difficult for doctors to diagnose. People who can develop a serious infestation include:

.
  • Those who have a weakened immune system (as a result of infection by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), blood cancer or chronic use of corticosteroids or other drugs that suppress the system immunological)
  • Those who have severe physical disabilities or intellectual disability
  • Australian Aborigines

Serious infections cause large areas of thick, crusty skin (especially on the palms and soles of the feet and on the scalp of children) that do not itch.

Treatment for Scabies:The two most commonly used options for the treatment ofScabiesare Permetrin 5% or Ivermectin tablets.

5% Permethrin should be applied throughout the body from the neck down (in children it can be applied to the face, being careful not to reach the eyes), being rinsed in the bath after 8 to 14 hours. After 1 or 2 weeks, the process can be repeated. Oral Ivermectin is used in a single dose, with replication after 14 days.

The success rate of the two treatments is similar, but Ivermectin is the most appropriate treatment for outbreaks in elderly people, prisons or households with many residents, since taking a pill is much simpler than applying a cream all over the body.

THEScabiesis treated with a combination of the two medicines: Permethrin 5% applied daily for 7 days plus Ivermectin, a dose on days 1, 2, 8, 9 and 15
